I'm a good example of the benefits of Pilates. In 1997 I suffered a severe prolapsed disc, which was agonizing, and I was offered a microdiscectomy. I turned that down and tried many other options, and in the end came to Pilates, which renewed my confidence in my back. I soon became an enthusiast, and with my background in Health Related Fitness (eight years running a rehab referral scheme at the Malden Centre in conjunction with GPs, Physiotherapists, and the Pain Clinic), I decided this was the way forward. I qualified in 2001 with Body Control, which I chose because of their insistence on thorough training methods, examinations, and brilliant teacher trainers, including Miranda Bass, Gordon Thompson, and of course, Lynn Robinson.
I am continuing with my training: In 2003 I qualified as a Franklin Method Basic Teacher, which has given me much more insight into how the body functions and mis-functions, and many more tools to use to correct poor movement patterns which lead to pain and stiffness. In September 2005 I started an MSc in Advanced Professional Practice at the University of Westminster. Recent courses have included workshops on post-partum exercises, on correcting scoliosis, on the pelvic floor and how low-back pain and incontinence link-up, and advanced, classical Pilates. My other skills include healing -"hands like a hot water bottle" -see the Reiki page. I am qualified in stress-relieving techniques known as Meridian Therapies. Recent cases have included anger management, fear of public speaking, and dog and spider phobias. I am a member of the AMT
